Hi, I'm 16, and I have a 1973 Scout International 2. Even though I love her to death, she's not gentle on gas, and the money is going to come out of my infinitly small paycheck. I would really apreciate some tips and advice(that don't involve selling) that would give me better gas mileage.|||Sounds like a cool car! Unfortunately the larger older cars we own and love also consume large amount of gas due to less efficient engines which used far less computer systems if any. Well, I would say keep her properly tuned up. The good thing about working on these older vehicles is that they are usually much easier to work on than newer vehicles that are heavily computerized. Make sure your spark plugs/wires are in good shape as well as the keeping the carburetor and air intake filter clean. This should help you but also be very mindful as how you drive your vehicle. Try to accelerate very smoothly without "flooring" the gas pedal and try not brake often of course only when you need to.
Hope this helps and good luck!|||Change the oil and air filters. Make sure the tires are inflated properly. Drive like an old woman, slow acceleration, long slow coasting stops, don't go too fast.|||all the usual tricks mentioned are a good start
also make sure it has a hose from your gas tank to a friends gas tank( someones car that has money....)|||There are lots of ways to save gas that you can do yourself that do not involve money. See my blog on gas saving tips, below.|||Besides the usual tips on the manners you handle the car, the other most important things is that the engine is in reasonably good conditions--meaning properly tuned up %26amp; good compressions etc
A badly tuned engine or well worn out engine really wastes a lot of gas.|||just keep a complete tune-up on it and if its got lock-in, lock-out hubs, lock them out, so you will be running 2 wheel drive.|||I found this really great blog post about how to get better gas mileage.. check it out, it has some awesome tips that really helped me out!
