Does a diesel car get better mileage than a regular gas car?

I am looking to buy a punch bug diesel. And people tell me they arent a good car and the gas mileage is a lot worse! Help please!|||Anyone that reckons a TDI motor is slower off the mark than a petrol powered equivalent, hasn't driven a modern diesel.





The torque figures on modern common rail turbo diesels is immense.|||According to Edmunds.com, a 2007 Mercedes-Benz E-Class midsize sedan with a Bluetec diesel engine costs $51,550. The gasoline version costs $50,550.





According to Edmunds.com estimates, the diesel gets an estimated 26 miles per gallon in the city and 35 miles per gallon on the highway, burning an estimated $1,343 a year in fuel. The gas version gets 19 miles per gallon in the city and 26 miles per gallon on the highway, burning an estimated $2,093 per year in fuel -- $750 more than the diesel.|||Usually diesels get better mileage. This assumes that the gearing and all that is similar. They just cost more to purchase and in a lot of places diesel is now more expensive than gas. This means it will take a lot more miles before you pay off that initial extra cost.|||A diesel will get better mileage than a gasoline car, at the expense of being slower off the line (you won't win many drag races)|||I have a 5-speed Beetle TDI and I get 45-49 mpg so yes, they get much better mileage. Diesel is a little more per gallon but you get much more out of a gallon than gas.
