Why does a standard car get better gas mileage than an automatic?

I've always heard that a standard car gets better gas mileage than an automatic. Why is this? Why does a standard car get better gas mileage than an automatic?
well, cars usually get higher gas miliage at lower RPMs. In an automatic, it shifts when it wants, usually when it hits a certain RPM or trips a switch somewhere. But, in a stick, you can shift whenever you want, so you have better control over the RPMs and can keep them lower.
The manual tranny is locked once the clutch is released.

The old style automatic torque converter is has some slip. So it gets about 10% hotter. That energy has to come from somewhere.

But many modern automatic trannies also lock at hwy cruise (but not at other speeds). So at hwy, there is very little difference.

Good Luck...Why does a standard car get better gas mileage than an automatic?
It is because of the torque converter. That's what one other poster said when he said a manual was "locked up".

The torque converter is a great invention. Its job is to get a load started smoooothly, and it works great. It just burns up a lot of energy doing that. It wastes energy by viscous dissipation (heating up the oil that it's churning). That is its only bad feature.

There may also be some friction advantages of a manual, but I think that's probably open to debate.
Probably because you shift as you want. Even downshifting in automatic it just does it when you step on the gas whereas in manual you have to downshift manually.

Pretty much you can better gas mileage because you have more control over your car.Why does a standard car get better gas mileage than an automatic?
Not for all cars

Some modern automatic transmission can get about the same or better gas mileage as the manual trans.

E: The Honda Civic LX gets 1 MPG less in the city, but 1 MPG more on the highway with the auto trans.

manuals don't allow the transmission to slip so there's less power lost between the engine and the wheels

more efficient energy transfer = better gas mileage
youre constantly running at lower rpms because a human usually wouldnt downshift up a hill when an auto trans would.
