What are some ways to improve gas mileage?

Please don't tell me to drive slower...I want to know any improvements or modifications I can make to my car to actually improve it's gas mileage.|||easy.

make sure your tires are at the manufacturers recommended pressures. typically anywhere from 34 to 40 psi works fine.

freeflowing muffler/exhaust.

cold air intake/ K%26amp;N filter in stock airbox if no CAI.

accelerate slower. not drive slower.

dont go over 68mph. gas mileage decreases over that speed.

make sure your car is in good maintenance. synthetic oils in the engine reduces drag, increases horsepower and will also get you better gas mileage. usual things to check is air filter/fuel filter/spark plugs/wires ect.

dont use your A/C when you can. if your gonna cruise with the windows down when its hot, just use the a/c. the drag from the wind slows your car down just as much if not more as using a/c so it doesnt matter either way. use one or the other or for maximum gas mileage just roll with the windows up, a/c off.

and finally, cooler thermostat. cooler engines use less fuel and also run better.|||Throwing money at the problem won't fix anything. Those gas savers they advertise all over TV and the internet - snake oil, every bit of it.

ALL of the biggest improvements you can make in gas mileage are between your ears and in your right foot. And yes, that does mean slowing down.

For example, as I recently proved on a long highway trip a few weeks ago my wife's car gets 2.5-3.0 mpg better mileage crusing at 70mph than it does at 75mph. On a 1,100 mile trip that adds up to a lot of gas. What's more important, a little bit of extra time or the money?

Acceleration is the other big thing. There is no reason to hammer the throttle when accelerating from a stop. You will not get anywhere any faster and it does burn a lot more gas than applying a very smooth, gentle throttle.

Backing off the throttle early when you know there is a stop up ahead is another frequently overlooked gas-saver. There is no reason to stay on the gas pedal until the last second then slam on the brakes just before the stop sign. You know its there. You can see it several blocks away. You know you have to stop. Get off the gas early and let the vehicle coast those couple of blocks and bleed off speed naturally. It actually saves brakes and gas and in terms of time doesn't really cost you anything.

Mechanically the only things you can really do are the kinds of things you should already be doing. Keep up on routine maintenance and check your tire pressures regularly - at least once a month but preferably once a week. Tire pressures have a huge impact on gas mileage. Don't follow the advice of some of these other idiots and overinflate them though. Follow the vehicle manufacturers recommended inflation pressures. They spend millions of dollars to come up with those numbers - they know better than we do.|||replace old spark plugs, replace air filter if dirty, replace pcv valve and your oxygen sensors.

Fill tires with nitrogen instead or regular compress air. Nitrogen air is better for your tire better it is not corrosive like oxygen and it stays and maintains pressure better in the tires so your tires will stay properly inflated for a much longer time like 10 times longer.

Get rid of dead weight. Take out anything you don't need in your car such as junk in the trunk. You can get rid of the jack and spare tire and just have a can of fix a flat or slime in your car for emergencies in case of a small flat. By taking out the spare tire you are saving about 30-50lbs of weight depending on tire size. Your car uses 2% more gas for each 100lbs in your vehicle.

If your car is a stick make sure your clutch is not slipping. A slipping clutch will kill your gas mileage. A new clutch will drastically improve gas mileage.|||tyre pressures, lower it to exclude air from under the car, smaller streamlined mirrors make a difference, a free-flow exhaust system and manifold and a better air-filter can increase efficiency... a chip re-write for the ECU. Remove all dead weight from the car... not too much else you can do other than drive in a more relaxed manner!|||just to add what everyone is saying.

umm....

i drive a truck.

and i tested how much i can go with the tailgate door up and down.

and i went farther with it down.

and i dont have a tonneau cover for it either.

so its always better to leave it down unless your truck has a cover on it.

=]|||this may or may not be true, but make up your own mind.
